Au Naturel

Since our recent financial/tax woes have been boggin me down, I decided to try some things I've been wanting to try for awhile.  Those things are:  home-made laundry and dishwashing detergent.  Now I'm even more motivated to try them since they are RIDICULOUSLY CHEAP compared to the stuff you buy at the store.  I've also been wanting to do it (but I've been too lazy) because I've been hearing about all the chemicals in the store bought stuff (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, phthalates, etc) that seep into your body when they come in contact with your skin.  The long-term effects of exposure to these are not looking good.  So now, I really have no reason not to.  I just need to get the stuff and set some time aside to do it.  I jacked a photo of my friend's homemade laundry soap and it looks interesting...

Last summer, I decided to try going 'no poo', which just means quitting shampoo on my hair, and it didn't work like I had hoped.  However, now I shampoo my hair every week or 2 and rinse it with water and baking soda every few days in between.  My hair is so oily that when I was shampooing it every day, it would be oily by the end of the day.  When I quit shampooing it, it adjusted and became much less oily.  My maternity leave was the perfect time to try it so I could stay home and hide my greasy head!!  Nowadays I'm really enjoying not spending the time on shampooing, etc every single day.  I still use conditioner, though, so I can manage to drag a comb through it.  I haven't bought a new bottle of shampoo since last summer!  When I run out, I'd like to get some Burt's Bees or something more natural, without all the chemicals and crap in it.  During my maternity leave I also decided to start using deoderant withOUT anti-perspirant.  (Poor Tate!)  The reasoning there was that I still felt stinky by the end of the day even when I did use the anti-perspirant.  I then found out about several people I know that don't even use the stuff, cause they don't need it.  So, after a couple sweaty weeks of using deoderant only, my body adjusted to that, too.  Success!  Maybe some day I'll be brave enough to make my own deoderant, too...

Does that make me a granola?  :)
